Depending on the type of work to be done, hiring teens can provide great work experience for them and also fill open positions that workers with more experience may not desire. Work Permits and Permission Slips
Be aware of whether or not your state requires your business to obtain a Minor Work Permit to employ teenagers. This permit is needed if one or more employees are under the age of 18 and it must be posted in your place of business. Also, depending on which state you live in, permission slips from the minor’s parents and school may be required.
Age and Hour Restrictions
Depending on the age of your minor employees there are limits to how many hours they can work in a day and a week. Workers who are ages 14 to 15 can only work 3 hours a day and 18 hours per week while school is in session. During the summer months, 14 and 15 year-olds can work 8 hours per day and up to 40 hours per week. Children aged 16 and older have no limit to how many hours they can work in a day or week, regardless of whether school is in session or out for break.
Work Place Hazards
For all employees under the age of 18 are restricted from performing any type of work that is considered dangerous or hazardous to heath. Some restrictions include driving and operating machinery and being exposed to harsh environments. Consider the job requirements for all positions at your new business before hiring anyone 18 and under.
There are many benefits to hiring employees who are minors, but there are a lot of factors to consider as well. Before you employ teens who are looking for a job, make sure you have checked your state laws and are aware of the rules and restrictions that apply.
